The supreme court will hear the first arguments of its 2026-27 term today at 10am ET. The case was filed by local officials in Boulder, Colorado, against Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil. It focuses on whether states can sue oil companies for the impact of climate change on their communities.
The energy companies argue that only federal law can be used to address this issue. Boulder is one of dozens of local governments that have filed lawsuits against energy companies that demands compensation for past and future harms to the environment.
