Travel bans for child support dodgers
Tanya Plibersek says the new child support legislation (which my colleague Tom McIlroy brought you a moment ago) will enforce travel bans of child support dodgers – meaning they won’t be able to fly overseas.
We got 200 cases where the debt is more than $150,000, we got one case where the debt is more than $2m.
The next piece of legislation we introduce will actually have transport or travel bans on people who have, outstanding child support debts of more than $10,000, will be automatically stopped from leaving the country and that is a strong incentive for people to pay.
You don’t know that at all. That has been reported and you can’t always believe what you read in the newspapers.
I don’t talk about what happened in cabinet but I can say to you that it is a very constructive discussion that focused on the real issues here. Which is making sure that our immigration system is fit for purpose, that it meets the needs of our country, and that – and by the way, that we continue to celebrate the contributions that migrants to this country make today and have made for many, many years.
