Lawyers across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa boycotted court proceedings on Monday on the call of the K-P Bar Council to protest the imposition of governor's rule and an emergency in the province.
The boycott kept lawyers away from courts in various districts, disrupting hearings and affecting routine judicial business. The Bar Council termed the imposition of governor's rule and the emergency unconstitutional and illegal, demanding that the federal government immediately withdraw its decision.
The province-wide strike was announced as a mark of protest against the federal government's move, which the legal body said raised serious questions regarding constitutional and legal requirements.
According to the Bar Council, the decision warranted a review by the federal government, which should reverse the measures to address the concerns surrounding their constitutional and legal validity.
Responding to the council's call, lawyers did not appear before courts in several districts, affecting the hearing of cases and other judicial proceedings.
The protest was aimed at formally registering the legal community's objections to the imposition of the emergency and governor's rule, while urging the authorities to resolve the situation in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
Meanwhile, the imposition of the emergency and governor's rule in K-P has also been challenged before the Peshawar High Court through multiple petitions.
The petitioners have questioned the constitutional validity of the measures and sought the annulment of the relevant government notifications and parliamentary resolutions.
The legal challenges have brought the legality of the federal government's decision before the high court, where the petitioners have called for judicial intervention.
The K-P Bar Council reiterated its demand that the federal government withdraw its decision, stressing the need to resolve the controversy surrounding the province's constitutional and legal status.
