At the press conference, Mary Lou McDonald, the Sinn Féin president, said she was not surprised by Donald Trump saying on his trip to Ireland that he favoured Irish reunification.
McDonald said:
The United States is a longstanding ally of Ireland in the building of peace on our island.
For decades now, and beyond that, for generations and generations, America has been consequential in the pursuit of Irish freedom. The 1916 rising was funded from America. The Fenians, their lifeblood came from the United States of America.
